Celebrating the Year of the Tiger

By: Gavin Immer, MS Mandarin Teacher & Jingjing Lai, US Mandarin Teacher
In celebration of the Lunar New Year, St. Luke’s Mandarin teachers organized a party on Tuesday, Feb. 2, in the Dining Commons during Middle School and Upper School lunch periods.

Lunar New Year, also known as Spring Festival, is a 16-day celebration in East and Southeast Asian countries, including China, Korea, and Vietnam. The holiday is a time for feasting and honoring the household, ancestors, and deities. It begins on the new moon and lasts through the full moon. Each lunar calendar is represented by an animal and element connected to the Zodiac signs. 2022 is the year of the water tiger.

To welcome the Spring Festival at St. Luke’s, members of the Asian Affinity Group and China Care Club, as well as Mandarin students, helped decorate the Dining Commons with posters, lanterns, and traditional Chinese scrolls. Students were invited to participate in fun games and activities, such as a Chinese Zodiac puzzle and a Chinese character handwriting competition. The winners were treated to a brown sugar bubble milk tea!

Throughout the week, students, faculty, and staff sampled delicious Lunar New Year inspired dishes during lunch, thanks to our FLIK dining services team. Dishes included vegetable, pork, and chicken dumplings; sweet and sour chicken; Asian-style salmon; and Taiwanese fried chicken. Plates were piled high with food, giving students the opportunity to test their chopsticks skills and successfully dunk their dumplings in a delectable soy sauce.

Many thanks to our Mandarin students who helped teach the community how to order food in Chinese and the Honors Mandarin IV students who created posters that explained the meaning of each dish in Chinese culture.
