St. Luke's Squash Team Head to Nationals

Daniel Clarke
The St. Luke’s Girls and Boys Varsity Squash teams traveled to Philadelphia on Thursday, Feb. 24 to compete in the 2022 U.S. High School Team Squash Championships.

The national event takes place over three days, starting Friday, Feb. 25, with the championship matches taking place on Sunday, Feb. 27.

St. Luke’s Girls Squash was handed a tough draw against the number three seed Westminster School from Atlanta. The Storm battled hard against the Wildcats in an early start on Friday morning but lost its first-round match at The University of Pennsylvania.

The girls' team has enjoyed its season with several players competing at this level for the first time. Although results have been tough, the team has worked extremely hard for Head Coach Lucia Mathias, who hopes the season-ending tournament will be a major highlight for her players.

The team will continue in the consolation bracket against SquashSmarts from West Philadelphia at 2pm.

St. Luke’s Boys Squash has also been handed a tough draw in group IV and faced the number three seed Westminster School from Simsbury, CT. The Storm played the Martlets at noon on Friday at Berwyn Squash and Fitness Club and, unfortunately, lost to move into the consolation bracket.

Before heading to Philadelphia Head Coach Brian Mathias was looking forward to the experience: “I hope the boys can focus on producing the squash they are capable of and let the result take care of itself. It’s a long weekend, so tomorrow, we will focus on playing our game and building momentum for the later rounds.
