Boys Varsity Lacrosse: Season Outlook

Daniel Clarke
The St. Luke’s varsity lacrosse team welcomes Rob Anderson as its new head coach and program director for the 2022 season.

Anderson, who was New York State’s 2015 Coach of the Year after propelling Briarcliff High School to regional prominence, comes to St. Luke’s with an incredible passion for lacrosse. He has also served in numerous capacities in the lacrosse club community, including at the director level.

Anderson is thrilled to be given the opportunity to coach the Storm and hopes to make his mark on the program: “I wouldn’t say there's one specific thing that I bring to the program, but we, the players and coaching staff, can create an atmosphere of belonging and unity. A unified front will give us the opportunity to succeed and do something memorable, and that is something we will look to do.”

To create a positive atmosphere, Anderson says he has been leaning heavily on the team’s three captains, Matty Goldstein ‘22, Johnny Cannon ’22, and Dillon Mannix ‘22, as well as other upperclassmen: “Our expectations have been very specific. We have asked our seniors to help foster the right environment and to hold themselves accountable by choosing their words wisely, as words have power, and by focusing on the guy to their right and left to ensure that all players know that they matter.”

In addition to his captains, who he knows will play a key role in the team’s success, Anderson is thrilled with a number of other players on the roster: “There’s no question our achievements, on and off the field, will be influenced largely by the actions of our three captains. However, Henry Robb ‘22, Matt Monterosso ‘22, Roderick Olson ‘23, Harrison Bennett ‘23, Andrew Parsons ‘23, Jake Dyer ‘24, and Will Moskowitz ‘25 are going to play a big role this year, too. Sully Franz ‘22 is a super talented athlete and faceoff guy, and Matt O’Connor ‘22 has been absolutely fantastic as a first-year player.”

The Storm opened the regular season at Hopkins School on Thursday, April 7, when it lost a hard-fought contest 13-14. The team bounced back in its home opener on Tuesday, April 12, recording a 15-8 win against Wooster School.

Anderson knows the Fairchester Athletic Association has an abundance of talented teams, but he believes the biggest challenge his players will face this year will come from within: “Our goal is that every member of the team plays for something bigger than themselves. We are our biggest competition. Every day, we have to focus on improving and being consistent.”

St. Luke’s boys varsity lacrosse is back in action on Thursday, April 14, when the team travels to Greenwich Country Day School. The Storm is on the road again on Monday, April 18, at Brunswick School, before three home games against Rye Country Day on Wednesday, April 20, Kingswood Oxford School on Saturday, April 23, and Greens Farms Academy on Wednesday, April 27.
