Girls Varsity Lacrosse: Season Outlook

Daniel Clarke
The St. Luke’s girls varsity lacrosse team hopes to bounce back after its disappointing home opener loss against Hopkins School to produce a run similar to the one that led the team to victory in its last seven games of the 2021 season.

The Storm was edged 13-14 by the Hilltoppers on Friday, April 8, but dominated the field on Monday, April 11, to beat The Harvey School 15-0.

Head Coach Kathy Drake, who returns for her third year to lead the program, was pleased with how her team prepared for the season: “Preseason was great, with a number of our returning players looking sharp. We are also excited about some new players on the roster. One of the highlights of preseason was hosting Team USA & professional lacrosse player Kylie Ohlmiller, who spent the day with the girls and ran them through some great drills.”

The Storm is captained by Annalise Correia ‘22, Macy Owsley ‘22, and Sarah Beran ‘23. Drake expects the trio to lead by example and help the team stay connected throughout the season: “We look for our captains to be leaders, on and off the field, and to foster inclusion. This year, we have introduced “families'' into the program, with each family made up of players from eighth to 12th grade. It will be the captains’ responsibility to foster inclusion by leading the groups in weekly team bonding activities and competitions.”

Correia, a Lafayette College commit, has excelled for the Storm. Drake has been impressed with a number of other players, too. “Sarah Beran and Georgia Bennett ‘25 have stood out in the midfield and on the offensive end. Those two, along with Annalise, make up our first midfield line and have contributed to the majority of our goals so far. Defensively, Brielle Renwick ‘23 and Lily Carre ‘24 have stepped up into leading roles, and our goalie, Gigi McWhorter ‘25, is developing well in the cage. Grace O’Connor ‘24, Bea Davenport ‘25 and Pearse Connell ‘24, all new members of the varsity squad, have had an impact already.”

Drake knows the Storm has a challenging season ahead, especially with so much talent in the Fairchester Athletic Association and New England. However, she is looking for her team to compete in every contest: “Sacred Heart Greenwich and Greenwich Academy are always strong, so we are anticipating competitive matches against them. We also know Greenwich Country Day School, Greens Farms Academy, and Holy Child are very talented, too. We expect our girls to put their best foot forward and give it their all in every practice and game.”

St. Luke’s suffered a tough loss against Holy Child on Wednesday, April 12, but is back in action next week with games on Tuesday, April 19, Thursday, April 21, and Saturday, April 23, against GCDS (home), Rye Country Day (away), and Cheshire Academy (away).
