Students Build Custom Ukuleles in a Functional Sculpture designLab Project

By: Matt Goodman, Upper School designLab Teacher
Since February, eight Upper School students have taken the designLab’s Ukulele Mini-Course, where they designed and built electric ukuleles during their free period. Each student’s ukulele has a unique body shape and personalized features, such as the pickguard shape, fretboard design, and volume knob design.

Students built their ukuleles using woodshop hand tools, such as the drill press and table saw,  as well as digital fabrication machines, including a laser cutter and CNC router. The students are currently creating process books to document the steps of their thinking in a portfolio format.

I created this mini-course to test the ukulele project to see if it would work as a component of the more comprehensive Functional Sculpture course. Functional Sculpture will be part of the new Upper School engineering program and count as an art elective credit.

Other new designLab course offerings include UX & UI Design and Mechanical Engineering. More information on these new courses can be found here.
