Boys Golf Bounces Back to Beat Wildcats

Daniel Clarke
The St. Luke’s boys varsity golf team bounced back after its first loss of the year to beat the Rye Country Day School Wildcats on Thursday, April 28, at Wee Burn Country Club. The Storm suffered its first defeat of the spring season on Monday, April 25, against Greens Farms Academy, falling to the Dragons 2.5-6.5 at Birchwood Country Club.

However, St. Luke’s responded well against the Wildcats, improving to 5-1 overall for the season, with a 5.5-3.5 victory. The team competed in extremely tough conditions, with Chad Ruggiero ‘24, Eoin Mueller ‘23, and Peter Cioffi ‘23 each picking up wins. Matty Shulman ‘25 tied his match to secure the overall victory for the team.

Mueller carded the lowest score of the day for the Storm with a 37 and was pleased that the team returned to its winning ways: “The loss on Monday was unexpected, so it was vital that we got back on track. The conditions were tough, but the boys fought hard to get the win against a solid opponent. We know what we're capable of, and this win, coming off a big loss, was huge for the team’s morale.”

This was St. Luke’s second win against Rye this season, with the team recording additional victories against GFA, Masters School (New York), and King School.

Next week, SLS boys golf takes to the course again, with back-to-back matches on Wednesday, May 4, against Hopkins School at Yale Golf Course, and Thursday, May 5, against Greenwich Country Day School at Griffith E. Harris Golf Course.

Mueller expects the team to continue its fine form: “We know anything is possible in this league, so we need to make sure we prepare the right way for Hopkins and GCDS. We need to maintain a winning mentality and stay focused throughout each and every hole.”
