St. Luke’s Alumna Returns to the Classroom
It was a full-circle moment for Laura Howells ‘16 this week in Hunter Martin’s Advanced European History class. As one of Martin’s former AP European History students, she came back to talk with the class about her experience as a Fulbright Scholar in Estonia and to share her perspective on the situation in Ukraine.
In college, Howells studied comparative politics and Russian (including during a semester in Moscow). Her Fulbright work in Estonia and anticipated graduate work are focused on how misinformation can be used to manipulate people, with special attention on how authoritarian regimes use information to achieve their goals. Her scholarship and experiences allowed her to bring a unique perspective to the classroom, as she led a discussion that centered on the construction of historical memory in the Baltic States and Eastern Europe in the post-Soviet era.
The students found her insights and work captivating. Seniors Sarah Case and Kate Ellis shared how she really got them thinking about how history depends on memory and the potential for memories to be inaccurate.
