Cessa Lewis ‘23 Nominated for Sondheim Award

S.A.
The Stephen Sondheim Awards recognize outstanding student achievements in high school musical theater in the state of Connecticut. All Connecticut public, private, parochial, or charter schools that produce a published, licensed musical are eligible to participate.

This year, St. Luke’s Cessa Lewis ‘23 was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Mary Sunshine in Chicago.

On Monday, June 6, Cessa, along with St. Luke’s theater members Phoebe McCance ‘25, Reese Kubick ‘25, and Leela Sharma ‘25, attended the 5th Annual Stephen Sondheim Awards Gala at the Shubert Theater in New Haven. When performers from different shows meet, they are given a fabulous opportunity to observe how other actors attack the rehearsal process, handle opening night jitters, and learn choreography, lyrics, and music.

St. Luke’s Theater Arts teacher Dawn Fuller shared: “The saying is true, ‘It is an honor to be nominated.’ Furthermore, the opportunity to see what other schools are producing is great for students.”

During the Gala, St. Luke’s students had the chance to perform ensemble numbers with other schools. As St. Luke’s Director of Theater Arts John Conners shared, “Phoebe and Cessa blew us away in the evening’s opening number — a medley of popular Broadway hits. Reese and Leela left us wanting more after performing a medley that paid tribute to Stephen Sondheim and closed the show.”
