St. Luke's Field Hockey: Season Outlook

The St. Luke’s field hockey team looks to build on the success of its 2021 season and hopes for another exciting and fun season.

 

Last year, the Storm finished third in Fairchester Athletic Association league play and qualified for the New England Tournament for the first time in 20 years.

 

Head Coach Emily Walsh returns with her coaching staff of Katie Boorse and Sally Rose Zuckart and is excited to see what this year’s group can achieve.

 

Walsh has been thrilled with the team’s preseason preparations and is eager to compete again: “Preseason has gone extremely well. Our program continues to grow, and we are excited about the work ethic we have seen from both new and returning players. We spent most of preseason getting reacquainted with our field hockey sticks and preparing to execute at game speed. Starting with the basics allows us to develop a strong foundation, which we can build on throughout the season.”

 

The 2022 squad is captained by senior quartet Macy Millones, Cessa Lewis, Kiley Galvin, and Izzy Dore. Walsh expects each of them to bring a unique approach to the role: “These four seniors are team veterans, each with their own leadership style. Collectively, they form a well-rounded, experienced group, who will be powerful role models for our players. I expect our captains to lead on the field, but, more importantly, I also expect them to be our younger players’  advocates and friends.”

 

St. Luke’s field hockey welcomes back a solid core of its roster, but Walsh has been impressed with some new additions, too: “We have a few players new to the varsity team and are excited about the skills each of them will bring to our squad. The new varsity players are Peyton Ambrose ’25, Bea Davenport ’25, Annie Harrigan ’25, Ingrid Kerr ’25, Jemma Goodman ’26, Emma Ryan ’26, and Sheridan Whitacre ’26. We expect these new additions to our squad to allow us to compete at a high level, both in games and at practice.”

 

The Storm opened its season with a tough 3-4 overtime loss at home against Hopkins School on Wednesday, Sept.14.

 

The team now has two road trips to Greens Farms Academy on Wednesday, Sept. 21, and Holy Child School on Saturday, Sept. 24. St. Luke’s was 3-0 against those teams in 2021, so Walsh hopes her team will get off to a good start again this fall: “I want us to compete for every ball and play as a team at all times. As a team, our goal is to win games, have fun, and become a close-knit group. As a coach, my goal is to have my players feel like they don't want the season to end.”
