Girls Varsity Soccer: Season Outlook

Daniel Clarke
The St. Luke’s girls varsity soccer team hopes to defend its Fairchester Athletic Association (FAA) League and Tournament championship titles this season, having won both in 2021.

The Storm enjoyed a magnificent season last fall and boasts a wealth of talent, despite a number of players graduating from its roster.

Head Coach Dan Clarke returns for his 13th season and believes he has the players to mount a challenge for honors once more: “We have a very talented roster but know the competition in this league is tough. We always want to be in the mix for FAA and New England honors, so we will have to remain focused and work extremely hard to meet our goals.”

St. Luke’s opened its season with an excellent 3-0 win at home against Hopkins School. Lena Olbrys ’25, Sarah Lau ’24, and Mackenzie Nelson ’23 scored the goals. Clarke believes each of them will play a key role this year. “Our front three of Lena, Sarah, and Mac will cause our opponents a lot of problems. They were a constant threat against Hopkins with their speed and work rate. I expect them to continue that form throughout the season.”

The team is led by seniors Natalie Owsley ’23 and Aidan Panian ’23, who Clarke expects to create a positive experience for everyone on the team: “Natalie and Aidan have been part of this program for a long time and know what the coaches expect and the style of soccer we want to play. I know they will be exemplary leaders, both on and off the field, and help the newer players feel welcome and part of the team.”

GVS has a number of new players on its roster, including goalkeeper Teagan Minnick ’26 and eighth graders Lucy Millones ’27 and Sabrina Cannaliato ’27. Clarke has been impressed with what he has seen so far: “We knew Teagan was an excellent goalkeeper, and she is really showing that for us. Lucy and Sabrina have come in and done extremely well, despite being the youngest members of our team. They are showing their quality and work rate, so I am excited to see what they can achieve.”

The Storm followed its opening win with another victory at Holy Child School on Saturday, Sept. 17. Goals from Mackenzie, Emma Sherter ’25, Lena, and Sarah gave GVS a 4-1 win against the Gryphons before the team heads into a tough week.

The Storm lost a tough match against Greens Farms Academy at home on Tuesday, Sept. 20, but will look to bounce back against Rye Country Day School on Thursday, Sept. 22.
