2022 Homecoming Athletics Recap
All six fall sports were on show at St. Luke’s 2022 Homecoming on Saturday, Oct. 15.
On a wonderful fall day, the annual SLS Fun Run got the sporting events underway, with a group of strong runners that included current team members, coaches, parents, and alumni. The runners met outside the Athletic Center for a quick photo before heading out on the 3K course.
The next event of the day was a girls varsity soccer match against The Masters School (New York), at noon. In front of a boisterous crowd, St. Luke’s delivered a fine performance and raced into a 6-0 halftime lead with goals from Mackenzie Nelson ‘23, Camryn Nelson ‘25, and two each from Sarah Lau ‘24 and Lena Olbrys ‘25. Teagan Minnick ‘26 had the shutout for the Storm.
The next varsity match was volleyball, which took place inside Carey Gymnasium against The Masters School. The Storm continued its outstanding run to record another win, dispatching the Panthers in straight sets.
Boys soccer was the next team to thrill the crowd as they faced Kennedy Catholic High School on the Class of 2015 Field, at 2:30pm. The Storm recorded a convincing 6-0 win, with a goal from Nikolai Bonwetsch ‘24, two from Eli Brody ‘24, one from Javier Minuesa ‘25, and two from Oliver Samardzija ‘26. The team followed up the victory with a magnificent 3-0 win against Greens Farms Academy on Tuesday, Oct. 17. Brody scored again for the Storm, with Peter Lewis ‘24 and Matty Shulman ‘25 also scoring against the Dragons.
On the Class of 2018 Field, varsity field hockey had a tough FAA matchup against Holy Child but persevered and ended up 3-0 winners. Goals from MJ Owens ‘24, Kiley Galvin ‘23, and Grace O’Connor ‘24 propelled the Storm to another homecoming win.
Varsity football played the final game of the day against Worcester Academy, at 3:30pm, on Watson Field at Pedrick Stadium. In the first half, the Storm struggled to get its offense going against a talented Oskee’s team, losing a tough game 18-46.
Athletic Director Matt Ward was thrilled with how the day unfolded: “It was a terrific day. The weather was perfect, it was great to have a full campus with alumni, students, faculty, families, and friends, and it’s always nice to get some wins as well. It was awesome to see a number of alumni on campus and our kids played hard. It was a great day.”
