St. Luke's Hockey: Season Outlook

Daniel Clarke
The St. Luke’s hockey team hopes to return to the Fairchester Athletic Association Championship game this season after suffering a heartbreaking overtime loss in last year’s final.

The Storm is captained by puck squad stalwarts George Foster ’23, Eoin Mueller ’23, and Matt Riccardi ’23. Emily Allen, returning for her second season as head coach, knows what to expect from the trio: “They are all different types of leaders but extremely talented at making every player on the team feel comfortable and valued. They are always willing to put the team’s needs before their own, and I am excited to see them continue to develop their leadership skills over the course of the season. I expect them to lead by example by playing with 100% heart and intensity every second they are on the ice.”

St. Luke’s opened the season with a 1-3 loss to Westminster School but rebounded with a 7-1 win against Wooster School. The team then suffered a tough loss to Rye Country Day School in its first FAA League contest, going down 4-5 in a back-and-forth thriller.

Allen has been pleased with the younger members of the squad as well as her returning players. She believes her team can compete for a league title: “We have had great production from our underclassmen, including Jack Squitieri ’27, Nolan Howe ’26, and Chandan Reejhsinghani ’26. Our returning players have helped the new players by leading by example and picking up where we left off at the end of last season. I am excited to see what our team can do when everyone is healthy and the season is in full swing. We want to win an FAA championship.”

Allen knows how difficult it will be to achieve this goal but is confident the Storm can mount a serious challenge: “We need each player to do their job both offensively and defensively, and we need to play smart hockey. I believe if we play with our full potential every time we step on the ice, we will make it back to the championship game. Injuries are always a concern, so our top priority will be to make sure everyone stays healthy so we can play our best hockey.”

The Storm has a big week coming up with three road games, starting at Greenwich Country Day School on Tuesday, Jan. 10, followed by Rye Country Day School on Friday, Jan. 13, and finally Kingswood Oxford School on Wednesday, Jan 18. Allen hopes her team will defeat their three FAA rivals by playing the style of hockey she encourages: “We want to play hard and fast. Our goal is to make smart decisions and force the other team to make bad ones.  We can achieve our goal by  putting constant pressure on the puck, forcing turnovers, and taking advantage of every opportunity to score goals.”
