Varsity Ski: Season Outlook
The St. Luke’s varsity ski team has been working extremely hard to prepare for the winter season, with the team’s first race scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 12.
Hannah Galos takes over as the head coach this year, with Paul Foley continuing as the assistant coach. Galos has been pleased with the team and their dryland training: “We have been doing a combination of strength training, cardio conditioning, and yoga, which helps with balance and coordination. Our first trip to the mountain was a success, and we are now looking forward to competing.”
Galos is thankful for the leadership of captains Lily Carre ’24 and Pearse Connell ’24: “The captains have been fantastic. I rely on them for help with team-wide communication and ideas for fun practices/team bonding, as well as to represent the team's interests and the face of St. Luke's at Mount Southington.”
With only one practice so far at Mount Southington, Galos hasn’t had a good opportunity to see what her racers are capable of on the slopes but expects them to continue to put in superb effort: “The goals of the team are to race well and to place as high as possible. We hope to have our racers prepared and competitive for the New England races in February. I want our racers to give their best on every run, even if the run is not going as well as they would like. Consistent effort and attention to detail will make the racers stronger and more mentally tough over time.”
The unpredictable New England weather has proved challenging already, but Galos has seen plenty from her squad that makes her hopeful for a fun season: “Paul Genna ’24, Holland Whitacre ’25, and Jordan Goodman ’26 are new to the team and have shown dedication and hard work in the preseason. I look forward to seeing them on the slopes more. We had a rain delay in our first week, but hopefully we will get better weather to prepare for the upcoming races.”
Races are scheduled for Thursdays at Mount Southington Ski Area on Jan. 12, 19, and 26, as well as Feb. 2 and 9. The New England Championship races will take place on Wednesday, Feb. 15, at Crotched Mountain in New Hampshire.
