Girls Varsity Squash: Season Outlook

Daniel Clarke
St. Luke’s girls squash has another youthful roster and welcomes a number of new players to the squad this year.

Lucia Mathias, who returns for her eighth year as head coach, is excited to work with the group: “This year's team is young. We have a number of girls who are playing for the first time, so my goal is to teach them how to play, while fostering a love for the game.”

Just three players on the team are returning from last winter, but Mathias is confident that all the players will adapt quickly: “I am super excited by all the new players, who are an amazing group of girls and not afraid to work hard. They have a lot of potential. They will need time to adapt, but I expect both the new and returning players to have a fun and exciting season.”

Mathias is thrilled with the leadership captains Gigi McWhorter ’25 and Maddie Winarsky ’25 have shown so far: “Even though they are young, they have exceeded my expectations already. Maddie is very organized, and Gigi is very charismatic. They both have such great energy. Since the very first day, they have made the experience a fantastic one for everyone on the team.”

The Storm opened its season at home with a 4-3 win against New Canaan High School, on Tuesday, Dec. 6. Gigi, Maddie, Juana Marque ’26, and Sarah Steele ’25 picked up the crucial wins against the Rams. The team dropped its next two matches before winter break against The Canterbury School and Sacred Heart Greenwich.

St. Luke’s girls squash is back on the court on Tuesday, Jan. 10, when the team travels to Greenwich Academy, before they host Rye Country Day School on Thursday, Jan. 12. Mathias is looking for her players to enjoy the experience: “I want the players to be relaxed on the court, knowing that their only goal is to give their best. They know that the whole team is out there cheering them on, so I want them to have fun.”
