Eighth Graders Participate in a Grade-Wide Leadership Workshop

Jessica Dowling, Eighth Grade Dean and Middle School Art Teacher
On Friday, Feb. 10, the Class of 2027 enjoyed a day of fun, community, and skill building during the first St. Luke’s Eighth Grade Leadership Workshop.

Students began the day with an exciting egg drop challenge, led by science teachers Susan Bralower and Mark Chuhta. Working in groups, students protected a raw egg from a tall drop and developed their communication and teamwork skills along the way. Caroline Sproule ‘27 noted, “It was nice to shake up our usual social groups and spend time with other members of our grade.”

Later in the day, students learned about empathy and belonging with St. Luke’s Director of Equity & Inclusion Jacqueline Nelson. The session concluded with a spirited game of Extreme Rock Paper Scissors, while Director of Counseling & Well-Being Kari Olsen and School Counselor Emily Kress led students through an engaging session on the relationship between social media and our emotions.

Head of School Mary Halpin Carter held a fireside chat with students, which yielded meaningful discussions on what it means to be a leader. Hannah-Sophia Grant ‘27 found the session particularly captivating, saying, “I enjoyed the fireplace chat. It was interactive and great to hear a relatable story about leadership from Dr. Carter.”

Sessions on service and gratitude, plus some unstructured time for community building, rounded out this special leadership workshop. Many thanks to our wonderful eighth grade faculty for organizing this special day for the students.
