At the end of January, St. Luke’s Mandarin teachers held a Lunar New Year celebration for the entire school. The Lunar New Year is observed over multiple days in China, North Korea, South Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, Indonesia, Singapore, Brunei, and Vietnam. In China, dumplings are eaten during Lunar New Year because they resemble money pouches and are said to represent fortune and prosperity in the coming year.

For this year’s celebration, St. Luke’s Mandarin teachers partnered with FLIK Dining Services and parent volunteers to run a Lunar New Year-themed dumpling workshop in the Café. We invited Chinese parents from our SLS community to teach students how to make dumplings from scratch, including rolling the dough, making the wrappers, and cooking the dumplings. Most importantly, students enjoyed eating the dumplings with authentic sauces purchased from a Chinese supermarket. Students also participated in a dumpling-making contest; winners received a red envelope with a $5 cash prize.

Lunar New Year is a special opportunity for students to partake in traditional festivities and gain a deeper understanding of China’s society and history.
