Celebrity French Rapper and Screenwriter Kamini Chats with SLS French Students

Jon Shee, Upper School World Language Chair & French Teacher
On Friday, Feb. 3, seniors in AP and French 5 Zoomed with famous French rapper, screenwriter, and comedian Kamini.

Students in our advanced French classes have been studying the concepts of assimilation, integration, and alienation of immigrants in France and watched Kamini’s film "Bienvenue à Marly-Gomont" or “The African Doctor.” Kamini co-wrote the movie about his life growing up as part of the only Black family in an all-white village in northern France and how he grew through the challenges associated with that time in his life. The film was produced in 2016 and distributed globally on Netflix.

Students also studied some of Kamini’s music. His lyrics reflect the struggles and successes that his family, originally from Zaïre (now known as the Democratic Republic of the Congo), experienced as immigrants in France.

During the Zoom gathering, students engaged with Kamini, who discussed the concepts of integration, assimilation, connection, and celebrity. Students asked him about his life, challenges, music, and experiences growing up in France (speaking only in French, of course!).

We were so fortunate that Kamini took the time to Zoom with our curious and engaged French students!
