Nelson Named Gatorade Player of the Year for Second Time

St. Luke’s Mackenzie Nelson ‘23 was named the 2022-23 Gatorade Connecticut Girls Basketball Player of the Year. The senior guard received the prestigious honor for her outstanding performances on and off the court. 

Mackenzie helped lead the Storm to its first ever New England Preparatory School Athletic Council Championship (NEPSAC) and its seventh straight Fairchester Athletic Association (FAA) regular season and tournament championships. Named the NEPSAC Class B Defensive Player of the Year, Mackenzie averaged 19.1 points, 4.5 rebounds, 4 assists and 4.5 steals a game, contributing to St. Luke’s 26-2 season. .

According to Gatorade, the Player of the Year Award recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the court. 

Mackenzie has maintained an A average in the classroom and is a trusted leader in every aspect of her life at St. Luke’s. She will continue her basketball career at Virginia Tech next year.
