On May 9, 2023, St. Luke’s senior Harrison Bennett was formally appointed to the United States Military Academy at West Point. The ceremony took place at St. Luke’s School with Harrison surrounded by his family, classmates, faculty, and staff.

During the ceremony, Harrison was presented with his official Certificate of Appointment. “We are proud that Harrison will join a group of recent St. Luke’s alumni who are clearly living up to the motto: ‘Enter to Learn, Go Forth to Serve’,” said Head of School Mary Halpin Carter. “This recent trend began with Emma Powless, Class of 2016. Emma was soon followed by Whit Kim and Ryan Murphy, both Class of 2017, Blake Haden, Class of 2021, and Molly Kim, Class of 2021. In a few weeks, we will recognize Roderick Olson and his appointment to the United States Naval Academy.”

Amy Powless, a field force representative for West Point in Connecticut’s Fourth Congressional District and St. Luke’s alum parent to Emma ‘16 and Sarah ‘18, led the ceremony. Emma is a graduate of West Point and one of only 67 women to complete the U.S. Army Ranger School. During the ceremony, Amy addressed the audience, telling them how only about 1,200 of the 12,000 people who apply to West Point each year are accepted. More than just a military service academy, it’s also one of the nation’s top academic institutions and is in the top five of all colleges and universities in the country in award winners of The Rhodes Scholarship and The Hertz Fellowship. “Those who are accepted spend four years at a beautiful, historic, demanding place that is the world’s premier leadership institution,” she added. “Harrison is a determined candidate and has worked extremely hard to receive an appointment to the Academy…I am confident that Harrison will do a phenomenal job at West Point and beyond, and I know that his family, friends, and the St. Luke’s community are very proud of him.”

Harrison planned to report to basic training at the end of June after graduating from St. Luke’s, but a recent injury caused him to put his appointment on hold. He has received a Letter of Assurance to the Class of 2028 and remains as committed as ever to serving his country. Upon graduating from West Point, Harrison will become a commissioned officer for the United States Army.
