On Tuesday, May 23, 2023, Roderick Olson ‘23 was appointed to the United States Naval Academy’s Class of 2027. Located in Annapolis, Maryland, this four-year military service academy prepares midshipmen morally, mentally, and physically to be professional officers in the United States Navy or the United States Marine Corps.

This year, more than 16,000 students nationwide applied and only 1,200 were admitted — one being Roderick. Brock Hamilton, a Blue and Gold Officer with the Naval Academy admissions conducted the ceremony and presented Roderick with a certificate. Below is an excerpt from Hamilton’s remarks.

“It is my distinct pleasure today to recognize the significant honor one of your students has earned by receiving an appointment to the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. The admissions process is unique. Not only do candidates need to submit transcripts, recommendations, and essays. Each student applying must receive a nomination, most commonly from their congressman or senator, complete three or four independent interviews,  pass a thorough medical exam, and successfully pass a physical fitness evaluation in addition to the usual submission of transcripts, recommendations, and essays. Screening is thorough, with a focus on well-rounded individuals who have demonstrated leadership potential and a willingness to accept responsibility, as well as outstanding academic credentials.

After completing the four-year curriculum at the Naval Academy, all students receive a Bachelor of Science degree in one of 26 majors and earn a commission as an Ensign in the United States Navy or a 2ND  Lt. in the United States Marine Corps. They will have a minimum five-year commitment of Military Service.

An Appointment to the United States Naval Academy is equivalent to a full four-year academic scholarship, including all tuition, room and board, and medical and dental benefits. It is estimated that the value of this appointment exceeds $400,000.

On behalf of Admiral Sean Buck, the Superintendent of the Naval Academy, it is my pleasure to present this Certificate of Appointment to the Naval Academy's Class of 2027 to Roderick Olson.”

Congratulations, Roderick!
