Holocaust Survivor Meets With 8th Graders

V. Parker
On Monday, St. Luke’s 8th graders gathered in the Fireplace Commons to hear powerful stories from Holocaust survivor Judith Altmann. Now 92 years old, Altmann talked about growing up as Jewish girl in Czechoslovakia and being forced into a Nazi concentration camp at 14 years old—the same age as some of the students listening to her. For five years she endured cruelty and great hardships that were inflicted upon millions during Hitler’s reign. Altmann’s concentration camp was liberated by British troops but many in her family had perished before the war ended.

Altmann has traveled the world telling her story. Each year she returns to the Hilltop to speak with the 8th graders as part of their Life Skills class. Altmann feels it’s especially important for younger people to hear from survivors of the Holocaust to prevent it from happening again.
