Hackathon 2017 Launch

V. Parker
From designLab Director Michael Mitchell:

Wait, what?  What’s a ‘hackathon’?
A hackathon is an event—typically one or two days—during which teams of participants collaborate on software and hardware projects. The idea is to come up with a crazy idea and get it working within a relatively short period of time.

Sounds awesome!  Tell me more.
The event kicks off on Friday, January 20 at 6:00pm and runs straight through until Sunday, January 22 at 12:00pm. Yes, you read that right—participants will be on campus for 42 straight hours. During that time students—both MS and US—will collaborate on unique software and hardware projects and learn new things along the way. We’ll have teachers, alumni, and subject matter experts on campus through the whole weekend acting as mentors. It doesn't matter if you're a beginner or experienced because it's about the process of creating and learning.

I’m in!  Now what?
The first thing you’ll need to do is assemble a team (or you can work on an individual project) and come up with an idea for a hack. Past projects include an arcade-style Monopoly game completely built from scratch (including more than 1000 lines of code) and a remote-controlled Raspberry Pi powered robot (with working webcam).

If you’re new to this, or if coming up with a project idea seems overwhelming, don’t worry. We’re offering a series of workshops leading up to the Hackathon to help become more comfortable with the software and hardware that will be used during the event. Trust me, you can do this!

Ready?
Awesome!  Registration is open now. Just fill out this form.

Please note:
Upper School students are expected to stay on the campus throughout the 48 hours, and will need to be picked up on Sunday—no tired driving. Middle School students can sleep at home or at the School. Details of what is needed will be shared closer to the event.
