St. Luke’s Takes Home Prestigious Theater Awards

By Dawn Fuller, St. Luke’s Theater Arts Director
St. Luke’s Theater started the spring awards season with a bang at the 2023 HALO Awards. The awards ceremony was held on May 30 at the Palace Theater in Waterbury and was presented by The Seven Angels Theater Company. The HALO Awards honor every aspect of high school theater: actors, singers, stagehands, directors, dancers, designers, and more.

SLS Theater was nominated for 10 HALOs for their productions of A Wrinkle in Time and The Space Between Us and won two.

Jackie Cecil ‘24, Dakota DeFrancesco ‘23, Hannah Johnson ‘24, Sawyer Woodruff ‘25, Izzy Leeming ‘26, Madeline Levin ‘26, and Elissa Tobin ‘26 won the Best Specialty Ensemble Award for A Wrinkle in Time

Myles Sead ‘23 won the Artistic Director Award for his original piece, The Space Between Us. Sead is heading to Oberlin College in the fall, where he plans to major in dramatic/creative writing.

“When people have asked me what this project is, I've always said it's about relationships,” Sead said. “This project is meant to be about the choices we make in our relationships: staying silent, being blunt, or choosing to lie and hide are just a few examples of what's explored in the piece.”

On June 5, members of the SLS Theater gathered again at the Shubert Theater in New Haven for The Stephen Sondheim Awards. These awards recognize outstanding student achievements in high school musical theater in Connecticut. All public, private, parochial, or charter schools in the state that produce a published, licensed musical are eligible to participate.

This year, Ali DeFilippo ‘25 was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Beth March in Little Women.

Congratulations, SLS Theater!
