Girls Varsity Squash: Season Outlook
As the St. Luke's School girls squash team eagerly anticipates the upcoming season, a palpable sense of excitement and determination permeates the school. Although squash lacks a formal preseason, the dedication of some varsity players who continued honing their skills during the spring and fall has set a positive tone for the team.
Leading the Storm are captains Sofia Ortiz-Salazar ’25 and Maddie Winarsky ’25, epitomizing seasoned leadership. Maddie's organizational prowess, refined from her previous year as captain, provides a steady backbone for the team, while Sofia, with three years of experience, leads by example, showcasing resilience and improvement.
Head coach Lucia Mathias returns to coach the Storm and has been thrilled with the development of her players. Gigi McWhorter ’25 has continued her relentless training and tournament play and will retain the coveted position of number one on the Storm. Juana Marque ’26 has used her off-season tennis training to translate to squash and introduced powerful volleys and agile footwork to her game.
New addition Maggie Fleuette ’25 swiftly climbed the ranks to the number two position, showcasing exceptional talent. Coach Mathias anticipates Maggie's continued growth and impact on the Storm's success.
Coach Mathias is excited for the season ahead and expects her team to continue to develop its skills over the winter. "This season is about mastering the subtleties – the 'lob' and 'straight drop,'” she said. “These techniques are not just moves; they're strategic tools that can redefine a match."
The coach's philosophy is crystal clear: each player is expected to give their best on the court.
Acknowledging that the season ahead will pose challenges, Coach Mathias emphasizes resilience and fearlessness. The girls are ready to tackle each obstacle head-on, demonstrating their fierce spirit and determination to overcome any hurdles.
With experienced leaders, standout players, and a commitment to improvement, Coach Lucia Mathias envisions this to be a season of growth and accomplishment for The Storm. "I expect each player to leave it all on the court, playing with heart and without fear,” she said. “It's not just about winning; it's about growth and resilience."
St. Luke’s girls varsity squash is back on the courts on Thursday, Jan. 4 when the team hosts Rye High School. The Storm follows that match with two road trips to Greenwich Academy and Rye Country Day School on Tuesday, Jan. 9, and Thursday, Jan. 11 respectively.
