St. Luke’s Math Team Qualifies for States

S.A.
Under the guidance of Math Teach Corliss Spencer and team captains Marguerite DeMarco ‘21 and Jonathan Hobson ‘21, St. Luke’s Upper School Math Team is gearing up for the Connecticut State Association of Math Leagues State Meet on Wednesday, April 7.

St. Luke’s is one of 31 public and private schools in the Fairfield County Math League. Throughout the year, each school’s team participates in six matches, which consist of six, 10-minute rounds. Each round poses three mathematical questions for the teams to answer and focuses on a specific topic in algebra, trigonometry, geometry, and other mathematical areas. Points are awarded for each correct answer. At the end of the six-match season, the top 50% of teams qualify for the state meet.

St. Luke’s will compete in the Small Schools Division and is up against teams from the Capital Area, Eastern, Fairfield County, Middlesex County, and Greater New Haven math leagues.

Team captain Marguerite DeMarco ‘21 is looking forward to the opportunity for St. Luke’s to participate in this year’s competition. “This is the first time St. Luke's has qualified since 2015, so we are all really proud of our hard work! Depending on how we do in the State competition, we may become eligible for the New England Meet, but we are just looking to have a good time and learn some new mathematical concepts.”
