Girls Varsity Sports Dominates on the Hilltop

The girls varsity squash and girls varsity basketball teams dominated their opponents on Monday, January 25.
Monday, January 5 was an exceptional night for girls varsity sports on the hilltop. The girls varsity basketball team and girls varsity squash team fought their way to big victories over Canterbury and Darien High School respectively.

The basketball team, which has been virtually unstoppable so far this season, looked dominant out of the gate against the Canterbury Saints. Mere minutes into the game, the Storm jumped out to a 14-0 lead and led by as much as 18 in the half. However, in a display of true grit, the Saints sapped the Storm’s momentum and fought back to close the gap. With 8:00 left in the first half, the score was close at 28-24. Despite the Saints’ best efforts, the Storm quickly regained the momentum and finished the half with a 40-26 lead.

In the second half, the girls retained the energy they had gained at the end of the first. From the first few seconds, it was clear that St. Luke’s squad was determined to maintain a substantial lead over the Saints. Each member of the Storm played solid, unselfish basketball in the last 15:00 of the game and, as a result, downed Canterbury with a final score of 69-43. With only two losses on the season, and zero in league play, the girls varsity basketball team is clicking on all cylinders.

Coming off of a 7-0 sweep of league rival King, the members of the girls varsity squash team were motivated to continue their excellent play. The girls did just that as they cruised to a 6-1 victory over the Darien Blue Wave. The Storm have now won two matches in a row and stand at 2-5 on the season. While the beginning of girls’ season was trying, the team’s two consecutive victories have undoubtedly proven the breadth of talent that exists among the ranks of the Storm.
