Making A Positive Impact on the World: Lunch & Lead with Meaghan Loftus ‘04

Alumna Meaghan Loftus returned to St.Luke’s having gone forth to serve. During her Lunch & Lead visit, Loftus shared her rapid rise from young, inexperienced teacher to school principal.  After college, Loftus joined Teach for America and was placed in an impoverished middle school in Charlotte, North Carolina. With great enthusiasm but almost no teaching experience, she was thrust into the role of Special Education department leader on her first day of work. Loftus rose to the challenge eventually earning her masters and moving to an administrative desk job. Loftus quickly realized she missed hands-on education which led to her next job coaching teachers in Charlotte’s highest poverty school. From there, she moved up to be that school’s vice principal and then principal.

During her years at St. Luke’s she enjoyed the connection she had with teachers but over time, grew to appreciate it much more. She said, “I was given a gift to go to a school like St. Luke’s.” Loftus was fortunate with her circumstances and remains aware her Charlotte students’ haven’t had the same advantages.

Loftus recommended the Teach for America program for anyone interested in education. She then reflected, “It’s so important to use all I have been given to make a positive impact on the world.”
