The St. Luke’s girls lacrosse program is in the midst of a bottom up rebuild. Starting last year, when the program reintroduced a junior varsity squad, interest and passion from the student athletes and coaches have brought a winning attitude to the lacrosse team. Meg Price, who assumed the role of head coach of the varsity squad at the beginning of last year, noted, “Last year was definitely a building year. It was challenging. We had a lot of people who were new to the sport. However, the girls never stopped trying. This year we’re on a totally new platform. We’re still building, but we are already a better team.”
The varsity team only lost one senior this year and gained eight freshmen with heaps of potential. “Having that base of talent for the years to come is going to be crucial,” said Price. “It is going to propel us forward towards success.”
While the team’s newfound depth this year will prove to be a big part of the team’s success. The Storm also have a solid group of seniors who have already stepped into leadership roles. Captains Emma Powless ’16 and Kit Hamill ’16 are talented lacrosse players and they are also adept at bringing the team together as a whole. In addition to the two senior captains, the Storm will field an additional three seniors. Sophia Lemmer ’16, Sally Clayton ’16, and Marguerite Meyers ’16, while not captains in title, will be looked to as leaders. Junior forward Ella Pepper ’17 will be expected to continue her role as a scoring force, while underclassmen Grace Keuhner ’18, and Kate Vaske ’18, will anchor the defense. 8th Grader Quinn Gregorich ’20, a newcomer to the varsity level, has already started to develop into a stellar goalkeeper, and will have many years to hone her skills in the net. Coach Price, who is understandably optimistic about the future, said, “We’re in much better shape than we were last year in terms of depth and skill. We only lost one Senior so the girls have already developed a strong sense of teamwork and trust with one another. It’s going to be a good season.”
While the Storm’s breadth of talent will undoubtedly be the most obvious reason for an improvement in the standings, the team’s philosophy, which is centered on a strong sense of camaraderie and teamwork, will be the cornerstone of the entire St. Luke’s girls lacrosse program going forward. Price stated, “The team came up with a motto last year: One team. One family. One Goal. Our motto is one. We’re all working together to build the program. Every varsity, junior varsity, and Middle School player is committed to getting better, and getting better with her teammate’s help.” With a determined coaching staff, driven athletes, and the support of the entire St. Luke’s community, the girls varsity lacrosse team’s future is bright. In the words of Coach Price, “The main goal for this team is to never give up. If they maintain a positive presence on the field, it will be a successful season.”
