Boys Varsity Tennis Preview

The St. Luke’s boys varsity tennis team, led by coach Boie Bogardus and senior captains Noah Schott ’16, Henry Vehslage ‘16, Bailey Vehslage ‘16, and Chris Bloomer ’16, is coming off a solid 5-4 2015 season. While an above .500 season is certainty a success, expectations for the Storm are higher this season. Coach Bogardus didn’t pull any punches when it came to how he felt about team. He stated, with a matter of fact attitude, “My expectations are very high. This is my eighth season at St. Luke’s and this is the best team we have ever put together.”

The strong Storm lineup backs up Bogardus’ claim. This year, Schott who will play tennis at Lafayette College next year, will stay at the #1 singles spot. Standout sophomore Ryan Manocherian ’18 will also remain at the #2 singles spot, where he showed great promise in his freshman year. The #3 spot belongs to junior veteran Jose Minuesa ’17, who played doubles in the 2015 season. According to Bogardus, the #4 singles spot has not been locked down, but it tentatively belongs to senior Henry Vehslage ’16.

The doubles teams will be equally strong this season. Bailey Vehslage and Chris Bloomer  will remain together at the #1 spot where they exhibited a good sense for doubles last season. Freshman Peter Denious ’19, and junior Porter Bowman ’17 will play #2 doubles. The #3 doubles spot is up in the air, as Max Lehnert ’19, Brian Peck ’19, and Mitchell Mount ’18 will rotate throughout the season.

The Storm’s deep lineup will be important, as the FAA tennis league is stronger than ever. Hopkins, Rye Country Day School, Greens Farms Academy, King and Brunswick are all consistently tough competitors, and will pose big challenges to the St. Luke’s team. However, coach Bogardus is not worried. He said, “We’re strong throughout. I think we have a good chance to win the FAAs this year.” The St. Luke’s varsity tennis team’s talent and positive attitude will make Bogardus’ prediction a real possibility.
