The St. Luke’s varsity golf team has had a dominant 2016 season. The Storm boasts an impressive 7-1-1 record. The team’s depth has been the key to their success, and it was on full display at the Western New England Prep School Invitational played at South Kent on Wednesday, May 11.
The team faced off against strong teams from throughout the region. The teams included Avon Old Farms, Brunswick, Canterbury, Gunnery, Kent, South Kent, Millbrook, Salisbury, Suffield, Trinity Pawling, and Westminster. The members of the Strom thrived against the stiff competition and, in the words of head coach Mitch Murphy, “played their best golf of the year.”
St. Luke’s fielded 6 golfers: Jack Maguire ‘19 at #1, Mark Gertsen ‘19 #2, Jake Lustig ‘17 #3, David Ball ‘17 #4, Will Frossell ‘17 #5, and Ajay Fernandez ‘17 at #6. The individual scores were all in a similar range, which again speaks to the depth of the squad. Maguire shot a 78, Gertsen a 76, Lustig a 77, Ball an 83, Frossell an 80, and Fernandez an 81. The scores combined for a total score of 392. Not only was the score good enough to win the invitational, it was better than Kent’s second place performance by eleven strokes. Even more impressive, the Storm were an incredible 82 strokes ahead of Millbrook’s last place effort.
With the WNEPGI title under their belt, the members of the varsity golf team look to continue their winning ways in the tail end of the season. The Storm will vie for the FAA title on Monday, May 16.
