Boys Soccer Downs South Kent For First Win

Dan Clarke
St. Luke’s Boys Varsity soccer team enjoyed a fantastic 4-0 win against South Kent in their home season opener on Saturday afternoon.

The Storm players were excellent all over the field against a talented Cardinals team and took a deserved lead through Andrew Epprecht ‘17 midway through the first half.

After some South Kent pressure, which saw St. Luke’s Goalkeeper Ryan Neafsey ‘18 called into action a couple of times, Jose Minuesa scored the second goal from the penalty spot to make it 2-0 at half-time.

The second half saw St. Luke’s really control the game with centre-back pair Chase Zammit ‘18 and Jack Neafsey ‘19 shutting down any threat from the Cardinals forwards.

The Storm created a number of opportunities in the second 45 minutes and Chris Besgen ‘18 was unfortunate not to get on the scoresheet after hitting the woodwork twice.

Jared Soltys ‘17 continued to apply pressure to the South Kent defence before David Ball ‘17 scored from close range from a Minusa corner. Ball then added a very late fourth to seal what turned out to be a comfortable victory for the Storm.

New Co-Head Coach Ryan Fairhurst was pleased with the performance and the result. He said, “The team showed great character to put in this kind of display after a tough loss against Hamden Hall. I was very pleased with their response. I thought South Kent possessed the ball well but once we scored the first goal we never looked back.”

The boys are back in action on Tuesday 9/27 away to Hopkins before another home game vs The Hoosac School on Saturday 10/1 at 2.30pm.
