Happy Homecoming As Storm Teams Sparkle

Dan Clarke
St. Luke’s Storm enjoyed a wonderful Homecoming on Saturday 10/22 with wins for Football, Boys Soccer, Girls Soccer and Volleyball.

The day got off to a great start with the Cross Country fun run as many faculty, students and parents took to the road, despite the weather, to complete the 5K run.

In the first contest of the day Boys Soccer enjoyed a comfortable 6-1 victory against The Harvey School to improve to 4-5-1 on the season. A stunning strike from Andrew Epprecht ‘17 gave the home side an early advantage and despite chances for both teams the score remained 1-0 at half-time.

St. Luke’s came out strong in the second period and a quick goal from Hunter Libman ‘17 gave them the 2-0 lead. A penalty from Alex Nerod ‘17 made it 3-0 before he grabbed his second,  the team's fourth, with a tremendous individual goal. Nerod picked the ball up just inside his own half before beating five defenders and finding the back of the net.

The Storm continued to dominate and made it 5-0 through Jared Soltys '17 with a curling shot from just outside the box.

Harvey pulled a goal back before Nerod completed his hat-trick with just two minutes left in the game.

Coach Ryan Fairhurst was very happy with the result and said, “It was great to see so much attacking intent from the team. They managed to apply what we have been working on in practice during the game. Andrew, Alex and Jared’s goals were all of real quality and they should be proud of them.”

Next up was Field Hockey who played one their best game of the season despite falling 5-2 against FAA powerhouse Hopkins. The visitors scored first with 14:02 in the first half but St. Luke's answered with Hannah Haden's '18 goal to tie the game at 1-1 going into the break.

Hopkins came out strong offensively in the second period scoring two quick goals at 25:59 and 22:59 and then again at 17:49 and 13:22. Kendall Boege '19 added Storm's second goal off Cameron Stonehouse's '17 corner while Emma Cropper '19 had 15 saves in goal.

Head Coach Brinley Ehlers was very pleased with the effort from her team. She said, "My team played with a lot of heart today. There was a big Homecoming crowd and it was a real team effort. To hold them to only one goal in the first half and then scoring to tie was a big boost. We then got down by a couple of goals in the second half but they never gave up against a stronger team. They played tough and that’s all I can ask for."

Girls Varsity Soccer followed and had an impressive 4-1 win against Marianapolis to improve to 6-2-2 overall for the season.

Playing a team who they beat last year in the New England semi-final on PK’s the Storm knew they were in for a tough test on Homecoming but really rose to the occasion.

Seena Panagiotidis ‘17 opened the scoring before Marianapolis tied the game to make it 1-1 at half time. A dominant second half performance gave the girls a comfortable victory with goals from Leah Panagiotidis ‘20 and two from Kelly McKenna ‘17.

Assistant coach Susan Garnett said, “This was a good win against a tough opponent. It’s great to see the girls take what they are learning in practice everyday and execute it in a game! "

The St. Luke’s Volleyball team also recorded an impressive win vs Wooster School and improved to 7-6 on the season. The Storm came out strong from the very first set to to sweep the Generals 3-0.

Although SLS had a slow start in the 2nd and 3rd set they compensated by handing Wooster a string of aces and un-returnable attacks.

There was some outstanding defensive play from the team’s libero, Ali Ferris ‘18 as well as defensive specialist, Alexa Vogel ‘17, who also contributed significantly behind the service line.

Bridget Dalton ‘18 had another excellent game and continues to put up big numbers as an outside hitter along with her opposite Emma Castiglione ‘18.

The Storm’s success on Saturday was due in large part to Maria Minuesa ‘18 and her expert setting. Ana Luque ‘17 also contributed with a number of assists and had a solid performance behind the service line.

In the last contest of the day St. Luke’s Football team posted their first win of the season in a hard-fought game with Capital Preparatory Magnet School. The Storm scored a first-half touchdown through Shaka Moales ‘18 and added a two point conversion to lead 8-0. Some stellar defence throughout the game kept Capital Prep scoreless and gave St. Luke’s the shutout win.
