5th Grade Diwali Celebration

J. Olsen/VGP
From 5th Grade Deparment Chair Jane Olsen:

On Friday, November 4, Mrs. Kaveeta Channamsetty and Mrs. Kavita Polaki came into our class in fabulous Indian clothing to guide us in celebrating the Hindu Festival of Lights, Diwali.  It’s a wonderful holiday predicated on the idea of good overcoming evil.  Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity, is the special symbol of Diwali. The most important Hindu religious holiday, it is a family and community celebration that lasts 5 days each year in the fall. Families decorate their homes with light and colors in special patterns, meant to ward off spiritual darkness. For our classroom celebration, we decorated tea-light holders (called "diyas") with jewels and glitter, ate wonderful special sweet and savory homemade treats, and learned about the stories and traditions of Diwali. Many thanks to both of these ladies for a truly special experience and a glimpse of an inspiring religious tradition.
