Grandparents & Special Friends Day, Veterans Honored on the Hilltop

V. Parker
November 11 was a special day on the Hilltop when we had a combined celebration of Grandparents and Special Friends Day and Veterans Day. More than sixty grandparents and special friends of 5th graders were able to join us this year. Our youngest students eagerly welcomed this opportunity to share their new school and observe Veteran’s Day with their special guests.

Hand-in-hand, fifth graders and their grandparents or special friends shared breakfast, met teachers and spent time in class where the guests learned what being a fifth grader at St. Luke’s is all about. Later, they gathered to hear the 5th Grade Chorus perform a spirited set of songs under the direction of Middle School Music Department Chair Katie Kaplan. Guests also enjoy a warm welcome message from Head of Middle School Gareth Fancher.

Grandparents and Special Friends Day is so special because it gives our entire community the opportunity to acknowledge the value and importance of these family relationships. This annual celebration includes an All School assembly. This year Assistant Head of School for Leadership & Innovation Jim Foley spoke with the grandparents, special friends and student body. In celebration of Veterans Day, the military service of each veteran in attendance was recognized and then presented with a letter of thanks from St. Luke’s Support Our Soldiers Club. Included in this tribute was the service of two faculty/staff members: Dave Havens (Navy) and Desiree Smock (Marine Corps).
