Winter Musicals: Rent and James and the Giant Peach
V. Parker
On February 24 and 25, St. Luke’s Upper School will perform its winter production of the rock musical Rent. When Jonathan Larson’s Rent first burst on the scene 23 years ago, it dealt with some complex issues rarely touched upon in a musical. Rent was inspired by the Puccini opera La Bohème and presented with a modern twist. Many of the topics it addresses still resonate today.
On March 3 and 4, the Middle School Drama is presenting the hilarious and emotional adaptation of Roald Dahl’s famous novel James and the Giant Peach Jr. When James’ parents are trampled by an escaped rhino, he is shipped off to live with his atrocious aunts. A stranger with a magic spell saves him from this horrible new life, offering him an unexpected escape in an enormous peach full of human-sized bugs. The peach soon rolls out to sea, and the group must cope with hunger, sharks, and each other. Come discover what adventures this group finds.
Rent will be performed on Friday, February 24 at 7:00pm and Saturday, February 25 at 2:00pm and 7:00pm in the St. Luke’s Seldin Performing Arts Center. (Due to some of the content, this may not be appropriate for children under 14 years old.)
