Marine Science Class Trip For Hands-On Learning

VGP
From US science teacher John Higgins:

Last Friday, the Marine Science class ventured aboard the RV Spirit of the Sound out of The Maritime Aquarium in South Norwalk. We were so fortunate to have an absolutely beautiful day on the waters of Long Island Sound.

While there were no whale sightings, the students assisted with plankton trawls, a benthic bio-dredge, and an Otter Trawl. Winter and spring flounder, mud crabs, porgies, slipper snails, comb jellies, diatoms, oysters, and sponges are just a few of the organisms we encountered.

The students confidently applied their knowledge of marine ecosystems and the dynamic variables specifically associated with Long Island Sound. It is rare that a group of students first experiencing a Marine Science class could discuss such topics as pycnocline, tidal fluctuation, and sequential hermaphroditism.

The St. Luke’s students’ behavior, attentiveness, respect, enthusiasm and pure enjoyment made this an incredible experience for all.
