Varsity Hockey Clinches FAA Playoff Berth

The Storm defeated the Fieldston Eagles 12-1 to clinch a spot in the FAA tournament.
On Friday, January 22 the St. Luke’s varsity hockey team locked down a spot in the upcoming Fairchester Athletic Association tournament, ensuring a chance to defend their title. The members of the Storm played some of their best hockey of the season, and came away with a 12-1 win over the Fieldston Eagles from Bronx, NY.

In typical Storm hockey fashion, the team looked exceptional out of the gate. Crisp neutral zone passing, as well as heavy pressure in the offensive zone, put the Eagles at an immediate disadvantage. The Storm’s dominance in terms of possession quickly translated to points on the scoreboard.  The first goal of the game came in the form of a low shot from the point that was expertly deflected by Sophomore Will Frossell ‘18 into the back of the net. Minutes later, Sophomore Jack Forrest ‘18 added to the lead after sneaking the puck by the Fieldston netminder with heavy traffic in front the crease. With the score at 2-0, and only a few shots on goal from Fieldston, the Storm looked poised to run away with the game. Minutes later, however, a Storm defenseman turned over the puck in the slot, resulting in an easy Fieldston goal. The Storm quickly recovered with a goal off the stick of Sophomore Ryan Neafsey ‘18, and finished the period with a respectable 3-1 lead.

Unlike in previous contests this season against rivals King and Harvey, in which second period momentum shifts led to tie games, St. Luke’s was able to maintain the effectiveness they had exhibited in the first period. In fact, the second period brought complete Storm domination over a deflated Fieldston squad. Less than five minutes into the period, Junior Will Foster ‘17 dished a beautiful pass to Frossell who was able to notch his second goal of the game. Frossell’s goal opened the floodgates as the Storm went on to score five more goals in the period. Goals from New Canaan resident Brenden Whitely ‘18, Ciaran McEnroe ‘17, Will Foster ‘17, Jack Forrest ‘18, and C.J Woodberry ‘19, as well as solid goaltending from Sophomore goalie Evan Ruschil ‘18,gave St. Luke’s an insurmountable 9-1 lead going into the third period.

Although the Storm’s offensive domination in the second period all but ensured a St. Luke’s victory, the team continued to play unselfish, fundamental hockey in the third. Goals from Cooper Truwit ‘18, Matt Crispi ‘19, and CJ Woodberry ‘19 (his second of the game), widened the Storm’s lead to 12-1. Fieldston managed to put a fair amount of pressure on the St. Luke’s defense, but Freshman backup goalie Andres Falcon’19, who had replaced Ruschil at the beginning of the third, stonewalled the Eagles’ offense.

The Storm are 5-2-2 overall and 1-1-2 in league play. St. Luke’s will look to build off the momentum they gained from the win over Fieldston in upcoming league games against Harvey, King, Fairfield Prep, and Brunswick.
