Varsity Hockey Defeats Millbrook School On Senior Day
The Storm honored senior Michael Yim '16 with a win over the Millbrook School on Wednesday, February 10.
On Wednesday, February 10, the varsity hockey squad celebrated senior Michael Yim ‘16. Yim, who has been deeply dedicated to the St. Luke’s hockey program since middle school, has been a bastion of level headedness and solid defensive play for the Storm this year. He was presented with a plaque, flowers, and kind words from head coach Ron Carlucci and athletic director Michael West. Yim’s tenure in the Storm’s ranks was also honored by an eventual 5-1 win over a physical Millbrook School team.
The members St. Luke’s team, after disappointing ties against King and Harvey this year, have responded with offensive tenacity that has resulted in a string of big wins in the past few weeks. The game against Millbrook was no exception.
From the outset, the Storm seemed determined to jump out to an early lead. In the first 45 seconds of the contest, one of the team’s leading scorers, Sophomore Jack Forrest ‘18, employed slick stick handling to create a clear shot at the goal. The puck met the back of the net, and gave the Storm a lead that Millbrook would never surpass. Forrest scored another halfway through the period, but Millbrook fought back to score a goal one minute before the end of the first.
The second period saw more of the same from the Storm. Although the final score did not reflect it, the contest was virtually even from start to finish. Sophomore goalie Evan Ruschil ’18 was typically solid in net, and even showed some flash with a few big glove saves on quality shots from Millbrook. Meanwhile, Jack Forrest continued his offensive explosion with his third goal of the game.
With the score at 3-1 at the start of the third, a Millbrook comeback was still in reach. However, eight minutes into the period, Paul Woodberry ’17 finished an end-to-end rush with a goal, giving the Storm an insurmountable 4-1 lead with ten minutes to play. Jack Forrest then capped of the game, and his exceptional offensive performance, with his fourth goal late in the period.
With the win, the Storm have strengthened their momentum going into the post-season. St. Luke’s is 8-3-2 this season, and will play a rematch of last year’s championship game against Rye Country Day School in the opening round of the FAA tournament on Thursday, February 18.
