St. Luke’s Own Jazzy Gillespie

VGP
Since January, Eli Gillespie ‘20 spends Sundays drumming in the Youth Orchestra at the Jazz Standard in Manhattan. St. Luke’s music teacher Peter Valera connected Eli with the program which gives talented, young jazz musicians the opportunity to perform in this famous venue, often with guest artists from the New York scene. The Youth Orchestra rehearses for a couple hours and then performs in the afternoon—frequently to a packed house.

"I am having a great time and have met some great musicians," Eli said. "The biggest thrill is learning the ropes. Performing on stage in the city is amazing."
