St. Luke’s Erik Eveland ‘16 Earns Two AATF Awards

DTSmock
In recognition of a high level of proficiency in the French language, St. Luke’s senior Erik Eveland was awarded two distinctive honors this week. In addition to earning this year's American Association of French Teachers Outstanding Senior in French Award, Erik is the first St. Luke’s student to win the AATF CT Senior Prize, awarded to one deserving senior in the entire state who is currently studying French and plans to continue studies in French or in a related area while in college. Erik had completed an extensive application for this prize, including a reflective essay and an interview in French.

Erik earned the 2016 Outstanding Senior in French Award for his exceptional commitment to the study of French, and resulting high achievement in speaking, reading and writing in French. This award was established by the American Association of French Teachers in 2003 and gives schools with AATF member teachers the opportunity to select one student to receive the certificate and medal each year. To qualify for the award, a student must:

  • have maintained an excellent academic average in French while performing well in all other subjects;
  • be in his or her senior year at a public or private secondary school or at a public or private college or university;
  • have demonstrated exceptional commitment to the study of French by participating in extracurricular activities related to French which may include but are not limited to the Grand Concours, study abroad, language week activities, tutoring, etc.
  • at the time of graduation, have completed at least three years of formal French study;
  • be a non-native speaker of French;
  • be nominated by an AATF member.

Erik was presented the award by Jon Shee, his French teacher and Upper School World Language Department Chair, during Upper School Town Meeting. Erik’s name will be permanently featured on the online honor board of the AATF for nationwide winners of this prestigious award.

Erik will be majoring in French and Chinese next year at the University of Edinburgh.
Congratulations, Erik!
