Standing Ovations for Avenue Q at Edinburgh Fringe Festival

VGP
“One the best versions I've ever seen. All the kids involved got a well-deserved standing ovation. I wish I could go again as the talent and professionalism that they showed throughout was something I'd expect of the main mile shows..."

From Director of Theatre Arts Jason Peck:

This summer, John Conners, Dale Griffa, and I had the pleasure of leading seventeen tremendous theatrical artists to visit London and then Scotland to participate in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

This was truly a life changing trip! We saw outstanding theatre. We soaked in inspiring sights, including trips to Stirling Castle, the Trossachs, and the Tate Modern Museum in London. We performed on Edinburgh’s Royal Mile and had four rousing performances of Avenue Q at the Church Hill Main Theatre—capped off by an amazing standing ovation on our closing night. We enjoyed seeing other high school theatre productions and also appreciated what a special theatre program we have here at St. Luke’s.

We participated in some fantastic workshops with Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre and the hilarious improv group Baby Wants Candy. Some of us were even brave enough to try the Scottish delicacy haggis (a traditional dish made from sheep or cow stomach). Some of us shopped on Prince Street and some hiked quite a distance to “King Arthur’s Seat” with its stunning vistas above Edinburgh.

But more important than the many sites we saw, we were given a remarkable chance to bond with one another and to participate in the great tradition of theatre. So often theatre is associated with entertainment. Yet all of us felt we were participating in something greater than ourselves and recognized that when theatre is done well, it truly has the power to change the way we act and think.

What a special trip and group of students. What a show! What a show!
