The St. Luke’s Girls Varsity Soccer team recorded its first win of the campaign on Tuesday evening defeating The Masters School 3-1 at Greene Field in Dobbs Ferry, NY.
After a good start to the game, the Storm conceded against the run of play to find themselves 1-0 down following an excellent individual goal by Masters midfielder Samantha Coffey ‘17.
The St. Luke’s girls responded well to the setback and answered with two quick goals just before half-time. The first came on the 35 minute mark from centre midfielder Leah Panagiotidis ‘20 who beat a couple of players before letting one fly from outside the box to beat the Panthers goalkeeper.
The goal clearly lifted the team and within two minutes Caroline Thompson ‘18 scored with an almost identical strike from 25 yards to give the visitors a 2-1 lead at the half.
The Storm continued where they left off in the second period and dominated for large periods with Sydney Napolitano ‘19 adding the third after some great work by Seena Panagiotidis ‘17.
The win moved the team to 1-2-1 for the season and Head Coach Dan Clarke hopes it is the catalyst to get the team going: “We needed this win after a very tough start. I thought we looked very nervous in possession in the first half which is not like us. The two goals just before half time settled us down and you could see the team grow in confidence from there so hopefully this gets us going.”
St Luke’s continues on Friday at home against Greens Farms Academy, a game Clarke knows will be another difficult one: “GFA players are always strong but hopefully this win will give the girls the confidence and belief they need going forward to play the soccer I know they can.”
