Cross Country Continue Their Fine Form

Dan Clarke
St. Luke’s Cross Country is enjoying a fine season so far with a number of excellent meets already in the record books and much more to look forward to for the remainder of the fall.

Head Coach Corliss Spencer believes there have been a number of positives to take away already including a 1st place finish for Will Foster ‘17 and Claire Wilson ‘18 at the Brunswick meet on October 5. She said, “I think the season is going well. The positives are really down to our numbers. We have good numbers this year and the students have great camaraderie with each other so they have a lot of fun.”

The team has been performing exceptionally well with countless personal records being set throughout the course of the first few weeks. One of the highlights of the season so far was the Brewster Bear with many team members running well at the event.

Spencer puts the record times down to hard work and training. “Training is going well but at this point it is really just about trying to keep everyone healthy,” she said. “We lay the base and did the speed work, which we will continue with, but everything now is with a little less intensity to try to avoid the injuries that are bound to happen when you are racing 2-3 times per week.”

The long-serving coach is looking forward to seeing what else this group can achieve and is expecting a strong finish to the season, “We have already had Will Foster ’17, Ian Smith ‘17, Will Berger ‘19 and Claire Wilson ‘18 run under twenty minutes but we have another group who I am expecting to see break that barrier. Jamie Ullman ‘20, Ben Jackson ‘18 and Nick DiCorpo ‘20 are all so close to running under twenty minutes - I am sure they can get there soon.”

Spencer is also expecting to see some good times from Freshman Chris Walsh who is in the “under twenty minutes” group “Chris Walsh has improved a lot and has finally figured out that he can run fast!,” Spencer said, “He went under twenty minutes and I can only see him getting faster.”

The season continues this weekend with the Homecoming fun run which Spencer says is always a great event. She concluded, “I want to ask everyone to come out and support the team next weekend for our Homecoming fun run. It’s always a great time and we hope to see St. Luke’s families there.”
