Girls Varsity Soccer Await FAA Fate

Dan Clarke
The St. Luke’s Girls Varsity Soccer team tied Greenwich Academy 1-1 on Saturday afternoon to complete their FAA schedule and remain undefeated in league play.

A win would have seen The Storm crowned FAA champions but they now anxiously await the outcome of other results to see whether they will be outright winners or have to share the Championship with Hopkins.

In a highly charged game in Greenwich, Seena Panagiotidis ‘17 gave SLS the advantage with just two minutes remaining in the first half. The Senior forward coolly lifted the ball over the GK from 18 yards after a through ball from Caroline Thompson ‘18.

The Storm weathered wave after wave of attack from the Gators in the second period with Brittany Barton ‘17 coming up big in goal time after time. However, with just 16 seconds remaining on the clock, GA finally broke through to tie the game at 1-1 and leave St. Luke’s having to wait until Saturday to find out their fate.

Head Coach Dan Clarke remained positive despite the disappointment of conceding such a late goal. He said, “It’s obviously very difficult to take with just 16 seconds remaining in the game but these girls should be extremely proud of what they have achieved. It’s very difficult to go through this league undefeated so that is a huge accomplishment. We knew a win would have seen us crowned Champions but it wasn’t to be. Now we will have to wait and see what happens next week.”

The tie saw GVS improve to 6-0-3 in the FAA and 8-2-3 overall.

Greenwich Academy host Hopkins at 3pm on 11/5 and either a tie or a GA win will see St Luke’s claim the Championship as their own.
