Lunch & Lead: Nadia Hashimi

V. Parker
Last month, the Center for Leadership welcomed Nadia Hashimi, a pediatrician of Afghan descent and an internationally bestselling author. Hashimi shared her family’s history with students. In the 1970s, her father planned to bring the family to the US for just a few years but the 1979 invasion in Afghanistan made them permanent residents.

Hashimi’s heritage influenced her life and her writing. She knew if her family stayed in Afghanistan, her education would be severely limited because of her gender. This inspired Hashimi—who grew up and studied in the United States—to work hard at school and become a pediatrician.

Her writing started as a hobby and grew from there. To date, she has written
four novels: The Pearl That Broke Its Shell, When the Moon is Low, A House Without Windows and One Half from the East. While her works are fiction, her stories have focused on issues of oppression that affect modern day Afghani women and girls.

The CFL Lunch & Lead series is an Upper School student-run program which brings in an array of speakers throughout the year. Click to view the Lunch & Lead: Nadia Hashimi photo gallery.
