Coding for a Cause

V. Parker
On Saturday, November 19, St. Luke’s hosted a Random Hacks of Kindness Jr. (RHoK Jr.) event in the Fireplace Common. RHoK Jr. is a nonprofit organization that empowers students to use technology to positively impact the challenges facing local nonprofits in their communities.

This one-day hackathon was open to students in grades 4-8 who were paired with student mentors. Each group helped develop prototype smartphone apps for local nonprofit organizations such as Kids Helping Kids, Halles Hope, Neighbors Link, and Person-to-Person. This highly successful event was organized by RHoK Jr. Executive Director Patrice Gans and designLab Director Michael Mitchell. Gans shared, “It was an amazing day. The kids did a phenomenal job brainstorming on an assortment of apps and coding, all in less than six hours!”
