St. Luke's Girls Squash Season Preview

Dan Clarke
The St. Luke’s Girls Varsity Squash team is looking to build on last year’s success and really challenge for major honors this season.

Under the tutelage of Head Coach Lucia Mathias, who is in her second season at SLS, the Storm got off to a great start last week with a resounding 7-0 victory over New  Canaan High School.

Mathias believes the squad can push on from Wednesday’s win and is thrilled with the talent she has at her disposal. She said, “We have some real depth to the team this year. Everyone is so close in ability. Things are very tight from our number one all the way to number seven, so I expect them to have a really strong season.”

The Storm will be captained by Natalie Bachman ‘17 and Caroline Nevin ‘18 and Mathias is excited by what the pair can bring to the team. “We have two great captains this year with very different personalities but who will bring so much to the role” she said. “ Natalie is amazing and so strong, all the kids see her leadership qualities and feed off that. Caroline is so bubbly and has a very fiery personality so brings so much energy to the practices.”

Although the head coach is looking forward to the season she knows the FAA schools will provide some very tough competition with Hopkins and Greenwich Academy expected to be extremely strong. She said, “It is always hard to tell who will be the toughest opponent as the players change and the rankings always change but all our matches will provide a test. We had some very hard games against Greenwich and Hopkins last year but hopefully we can reverse the result this time.”

Mathias knows Bachman and Nevin will compete with the very best but she is also hoping for a lot from other members of the squad. She added, “We have given all the girls a squash diary and have asked them to write down their own personal goals for the season. We have great group of girls and Caroline Pellegrino ‘21 and Haley Bloch ‘20 are super strong players and will be at number one and two so we are hoping for a great year.”

The Girls Varsity Squash team continue their season this afternoon with a home game against Rye Country Day at 5pm.
