St. Luke’s Boys Varsity Squash will probably be the most youthful squad in high school sports this Fall, possibly in the whole of New England. With no Senior players the squad will be made up of five Juniors, one Sophomore, one Freshman and eight middle school players.
Head Coach Brian Mathias expects a difficult year but knows the experience will be invaluable for his younger players. He said, “It’s going to be a tough season as we will be facing a lot of teams who have more experienced players. It’s going to be interesting to see how our younger kids match up against older, and in a lot of cases, physically stronger opponents.
The Storm will be captained by Logan Diliberto ‘18 and Dennis Polyakov ‘18 and Mathias is looking for them to help guide the younger members and help them develop over the season. He said, “The goal of the team is really, despite squash being an individual sport, to try to really pull together and generate a lot of intensity in the training so we can come to the matches as prepared as possible. That will really be a team effort to be able to push each other on the court, day in and day out, and try to harness the power of the team to push the training forward.”
Polyakov will start in the number one position and the head coach is looking for him to lead from the front. He added, “Dennis is going to be our number one and he is a very experienced tournament player. He will be key at the top of our line-up and we hope he will get us a lot of points.”
Mathias, who is in his third year at SLS, is also looking to his other Juniors to contribute a lot this term and expects to pick up points throughout the line-up. He said, “As well as Dennis and Logan, further down the line-up we have Ajit Akole who is a Junior and has a wealth of experience. I expect him to win a lot of matches at number five and see him as one of the anchors of the team.”
The Boys team started with a tough loss to Rye High School on Wednesday but are looking to bounce back this week against Squash Haven followed by a home game against Hopkins on Wednesday.
