Lunch and Lead with Jigsaw Head Engineer John Sarapata

V. Parker
From Beth Yavenditti, Director of Global Education & Michael Mitchell, designLab Director

John Sarapata,The Head Engineer for Jigsaw (formerly Google Ideas), shared his work experiences with US students and faculty on the April 13th Center for Leadership’s Lunch and Lead. Sarapata talked about how his team uses technology to solve geopolitical problems and help users facing organized violence and oppression. His team is working three projects including: defending news, human rights, and election websites from attacks; fighting online harassment and abuse; and helping circumvent censorship.

Sarapata emphasized the importance of teamwork, service work and having a global perspective in all his projects. He also discussed the value of having a diverse team—in race, sex and background—to help produce the best strategic result. His advice to the students was to follow your interests and try different experiences. His own background includes finance, business and working in defense as well as technology.

This Lunch & Lead was a great opportunity to hear from someone whose job reflects some of the principles applied in the Center for Leadership: global perspective, creative problem-solving and helping others.
