By Carolina Warneyrd ‘19:
On April 4, the St. Luke’s WISE Club (Women in STEM Education) met with Turner Construction Project Engineer Kristine Ba who is managing St. Luke’s new Humanities, Visual Arts & Library Wings construction. Ms. Ba talked about how in high school she wanted to be an architect because she enjoyed art, but discovered her passion for construction while studying at MIT. The Turner projects she has worked on include hospitals, office centers, and schools.
Ms. Ba talked about being a woman in construction, recognizing that while people may think it is uncommon to see women in her position, the male to female ratio is growing each year.
We heard stories about the challenges of bringing an architect’s vision to reality and how many different technicians and experts she collaborates in the building process. It was interesting hearing some behind-the-scenes details about the St. Luke’s construction project.
Many thanks to Ms. Bau for taking the time to meet with the WISE Club.
